How did he become famous?

“Salt Bae” became an internet sensation when a video of him flamboyantly sprinkling salt went viral. Yes really.

In classic modern Internet fashion, the clip quickly took off around the world, with other videos and memes created using the clip.

The original video alone received millions of views, and the iconic salt-sprinkling method became its recognizable feature.

Who is ‘Salt Bae’?

The man behind the viral clip is Turkish chef and restaurateur Nusret Gökçe.

Nusret has cooked for stars such as David Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio, but has also become a celebrity in his own right with nearly 40 million Instagram followers.

According to The Sun, the chef was born near Istanbul in 1983 and was the son of a miner.

His family took him out of school early due to financial pressures, and from the age of just 12 he began working as an apprentice in Turkish steakhouses.

By the time he was in his twenties, Nusret traveled to Buenos Aires to learn more about their beef and the art of butchery.

He told NBC News: “I’ve always wanted and wanted to open a restaurant.”

His first restaurant opened in 2010 and quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to its quality steaks and excellent service.

The original Nusr-Et steakhouse in Istanbul’s Etiler district opened with just eight tables and 10 employees.

The chain took off when Turkish businessman Ferit Sahenk was so impressed with his meal that he offered to invest, leading Nusr-et to open various locations in the Middle East, including Ankara , Doha and Dubai.

Now Nusret has exclusive steakhouses in some of the most amazing places in the world, such as Dubai, Miami, New York, Mykonos and Beverly Hills.

The celebrity chef is often surrounded by beautiful female guests in several of his posts, but he’s previously claimed he’s too busy for a relationship.

He said, “I’m so focused on meat that I can’t see a woman or anything. I don’t have time for a girlfriend.”

A post on Instagram suggests he has quite a large family, after he shared an image with nine children alongside the caption: “The man who doesn’t spend time with his family is not a real man.”
