Third Coast Grabs SRSLY, Jimmy John’s Goes Ooh-La-La, Spirited Steaks Sizzle thanks to Still Austin & Double J Ranch, and There’s Some Robot Rolling Up with Your Chicken Tikka Masala…: All the news that’s good to thrill your taste buds – Food

Here’s some of what’s happening in Austin’s food scene, pulled from numerous PR posts, words on the digital street, and even the occasional (verified) IRL eavesdropping.

Third Coast raises more than a bar

Anyone who loves coffee and chocolate knows the pair’s merger is a good thing indeed, and won’t be surprised – but probably pleased AF – to know that Joe Lozano and the fierce Third Coast Coffee Merchants have acquired Austin’s SRSLY chocolate . What can you expect other than unmatched quality and sustainable practices? Says the SRSLY ad: “Same name, same equipment, same cocoa, same tried and tested recipes, same delicious chocolate, same personal customer service.” And we’re really happy about that…

Okay, you’ve already made reservations for Valentine’s weekend, is not it ? If not, lovers, then check out our announcements right here…

The ha-ha-ha, yes. But we bet it tastes pretty good too!

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, here’s a promotional stunt that’s a fucking hoot and a half: Jimmy John’s, that national fast food chain, is having something called Chateau Jé Jé in 1102 E. Caesar Chavez. It’s a unique, intimate, sit-down, al fresco concept restaurant to help couples celebrate Valentine’s Day – with a four-course meal centered on Jimmy John’s sandwiches, soda and fries sommeliers on hand to help diners, and a romantic garden setting with a live jazz band singing “sensual sandwich ballads.” Hyuk! This absurd delight of an experience will be available (by reservation only) on February 11 and 12…

And remember that Cookies and cocktails competition at Fair marketfrom Central Texas Girl Scouts and local professional mixologists? Yeah, no: concerns about last Thursday’s ice storm put the hol ‘kibosh on the highly anticipated event – but! But the event has been postponed to Friday, April 29. You know : After the city had a few weeks to recover from the return of the South by Southwest festival…

But what’s at the Fair Market tomorrowThu. Feb. 10, 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. — is the Wine & Food Foundation’s Big Reds & Bubbles celebration. It’s a wine and food tasting experience, with a dazzling array of some of the world’s finest champagnes, sparkling wines and ‘great reds’, as well as names from many of Austin’s finest restaurants. Maybe a few more tickets available here…

Have you noticed that new Thompson Austin hotel on the corner of Fifth & Brazos? Big ol’ thing, a concerted luxury flex from the folks at Hyatt, and kinda hard to miss, tbh? Well, Wax Myrtle’s – their swanky fourth-floor poolside bar and restaurant – is open for business to Mon 14 Feband will offer “Mediterranean dishes with a local touch” and a veritable flotilla of thirst-quenching cocktails…

You know how people say, “Well boy, it goes together like wine and yoga!” No? It is because people do not do actually say that – again. But they could to start up saying so, now that Vino Vinyasa has announced its first wine and yoga retreat, to be held in beautiful Texas Hill Country (specifically: Fredericksburg) in April, where guests will learn about and taste wines from the region, experience a delicious food and wine pairings and practice yoga on the vineyard side. Morgane Perryyes, you could be onto a very good thing here…

Meanwhile, coming much sooner – Tue 22 February — is the Double J Ranch’s Full Circle Sustainable Steak Dinner at The Long Time, featuring some of the best beef in the country (cooked over an open fire by a team from Jack Allen’s Kitchen) and cocktails made with Still Austin whiskey. Now, on the face of it, this is a wonderful collaboration, and who wouldn’t want to be part of such a thing – especially when it’s complemented by live fireside music by Eric Tessmer and Tomar & the FCs, is it not? But there is a deeper reason at work here: Still Austin, you see, still uses 100% Texas beans to make their spirits. And, after completing the distillation, they send the spent grains to local ranchers and farmers to use as livestock feed. So, at these locations – for example: Double J Ranch – free range cattle will only ever consume Still Austin spent grain and native Texas grasses. Now, it’s synergy! And also a partial explanation of why these steaks are going to be so good…

And, even earlier than that – on Wed 16 Feb – there will be a Makha Bucha Day Dinner at Sway in Westlake. Makha Bucha is a Buddhist festival that takes place on the night of the full moon during the third lunar month of the year, and it is all about “letting go”. So there will be a real fire to burn your paper pet peeves, soft drinks and a rooftop shrine from Kin Euphorics, DJ Shani spinning the tunes, and of course that modern Australian Thai dinner menu…

Alright, vegans, we shout “Uncle!” now. Because we’ve already seen where Hopdoddy added these Beyond Beef options to his decent burger menu, and now Freebirds World Burrito has partnered with Austin’s Siete Family Foods (for grain-free tortillas) and Abbot’s California Butcher (for meatless chorizo) to supercharge their own offerings with plenty herbal yum. Note to one of our bloody carnist colleagues: do you have try this thing lately? Because, some of them? It’s good enough to make you wonder why you would still bite off the flesh of a dead animal…

We can’t help but wonder what Dr. Asimov might have ordered

First, they cut out the meat; then they will finish with the humans? Let’s not even ask who “they” are in general, but please note that coconut, the Los Angeles-based robotic delivery service, has begun its program to bring Austinites delivery from 10 Coco partner restaurants, including Arpeggio Grill, Bamboo Bistro, Clay Pit, DeSano Pizzeria, Tuk Tuk Thai and Aviator Pizza. A bunch of little ones food-lockers-on-wheelswith a remote human helping them navigate sidewalks (where there are are sidewalks and these sidewalks are not already obstructed by, like, scooters and the like) – and their number will to augment. Note: This initial launch includes merchants serving the South Lamar, South Congress, South Austin, Downtown, Northside, North Loop and Domain neighborhoods…

Mmm, those heart-shaped pies from Southside Flying Pizza

What else, what else? We’ve told you how the big bosses at Truff, recently transferred to Austin, make their sensational condiment…we’ve rounded up a few coffee liqueurs and more for your java-centric consideration…there was this Valentine’s Day weekend additional …and our cultural editor has revealed the culinary expansions the irresistible Josh Frank is fomenting with his Blue StarBite Cinema Al Fresco which will feature themed menus from Chef Kelsey Rose…

Now eat as good as you can, tip like it’s going out of fashion and watch out for those ronas.
