The Da Vinci Code

It isn't some great new threat to the church, just another person unearthing gnostism to offer us a cost-free Jesus...

Endless books have been written about The Da Vinci Code. All a little unnecessary. Its a good blockbuster type book. Save your cash and have a look at this:

Westminster Theological Seminary have put together this website with some good stuff on it if you do want to think about it by people like Garry Williams, Tim Keller and Darrell Bock:

  1. Wow, I just attended a church grad student discussion tonight about The DaVinci Code, and I was trying to make some of the same points you did here. I think you're totally right about this.

Believe it or not, there's a big Gnostic church in my home town. I hope to give it a visit next time I'm there. It would be interesting to hear their perpective on the book.

  2. Gnosticism is so appealing because if you believed it to be true it requires nothing of you...

The trailer proposes that it has a secret so devastating that it would shake the foundations of civilisation...

Contrary to that God revealed the "secret", the "mystery" of the gospel in all its fulness 2000 years ago. And that is a revealed mystery so vast that it did shake the earth... and if the gravity of it was realised would shake the foundations of every human being. A mystery of the greatest power and wisdom, namely Christ Crucified.

  3. I saw the film last night, and I think there is a danger we make our reaction to it the be all and end all (as with The Passion?), but we do need to ready to defend the faith surely?
