Engaging culture - Elizabethan style

Shakespeare famously said 'all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players'. But if he's right, what kind of show is going on?

Is it more like 'Who's line is it anyway?' where the LCive Anderson assigned the actors a particular scene and the actors ad libbed their way to wherever they want to go until Clive rang his bell to bring it to a swift end?

Or is it more like a Gilbert and Sullivan musical, where it was imperative that the actors did exactly as the direction said and stuck to the script else it wouldn't work as it was intended, as every word had a gravitas of its own and necessitated the its rhyme, on the next line, in correct time?
