"I think you need to read a book, dude"

Reading books is good. Its good to discipline us. Its good to help us grow. Its good because its good. Its good because we need each other.

Top books I've read this year:
Whoredom, Raymond Ortlund
The Roots of Endurance, John Piper
Sex & The Supremacy of Christ, John Piper/Justin Taylor (eds)
The Glory of Jesus, John Owen
Amusing ourselves to death, Neil Postman
The Word of His Grace, Chris Green
Not Even a Hint, Joshua Harris
The Gospel-Driven Church, Ian Stackhouse

Atonement, Ian McEwan
The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis
The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown

On my bookshelf to read soon:
The Holy Spirit, John Owen
Reclaiming the Center, Justin Taylor etc.
The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis (rest of series, re-reading)
The Alchemist, Paul Coelho

Books I want to read but don't own:
God is the Gospel, John Piper
Humility: True Greatness, CJ Mahaney

Suggestions for good books to read most welcome, particularly some more good fiction.

  1. If you have not already read it, on the fiction side I think you would enjoy Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Although make sure you get past the first 50 pages or so. A former uni friend who read it on my recomendation went as far as to say it 'restored his faith in fiction'!

  2. Yeah I tried Life of Pi last summer, I think I got about 100 pages in and got a bit bogged down. Given the number of people who speak highly of it I ought to give it another try!

  3. "How to be good" by Nick Hornby. I've just written a semi-review / appetiser myself. It's a great story, dealing with the issues the title suggests. His books are great: very funny, and very human.

  4. I'm glad you got to read Amusing Ourselves to Death!

  5. You've said many kind things about C.J. Mahaney and Sovereign Grace Ministries, Dave. Thanks for your interest! I'm glad you are looking forward to C.J.'s forthcoming book on Humility. It will be released by Multnomah in late October here in the U.S. I'm not sure about international sales.

We also appreciated your thoughtful review of Sex and the Supremacy of Christ.

May the Lord richly bless you as you serve His people,

  6. Hello!

Thanks for dropping by and commenting.

I look forward to the book on Humility. CJ gave us a taster in the cheeky extra talk before one of his talks at the NewFrontiers conference in July. Superb! It was also great to see a group of students/youth receive such clear teaching from his Christ our Mediator talk - so necessary, and yet rarely do that age group hear teaching that is so clear on the cross, and the objective truth of the gospel. It was wonderful!

Since I first discovered the work of Sovereign Grace Ministries just over a year ago I've been much encouraged - please keep doing what you're doing. Its refreshing to see such gospel-centred ministry, and inspiration to press on with the same here in the UK.
